Landmarks lit on eve of Ukraine war anniversary

Date:

European landmarks lit up to mark the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Eiffel Tower was illuminated in the colours of the Ukrainian flag – blue and yellow – on Thursday in support of the Ukrainian people. Landmarks across other European countries, including Portugal, Belgium and Montenegro were also lit up to mark the anniversary. The parliament building in Lisbon displayed the national colours of Ukraine. Portugal has been supportive of Ukraine since Russia engaged in a full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022. In the Belgian capital, several EU buildings, including the European Parliament, the European Commission and the European Council, joined the public display of solidarity. Friday’s milestone marks a full year of killing, destruction, loss and pain felt even beyond the borders of Russia and Ukraine.
